How Might We:
“How might we design a unified, visually appealing air purifier that maintains brand visibility and intuitive usability, while elevating both functionality and aesthetics in any interior environment?”
Context
Air purifiers are essential for healthy living, but they rarely receive the attention they deserve in interior environments. Praan’s Hive product lineup consisted of two variants: the industrial MKII and the consumer Hive. However, their visual dissonance resulted in a fragmented brand identity. The project aimed to resolve these inconsistencies and create a signature presence for Hive 2.0.
Product Study
The Praan Hive uses a flat perforated grill for air intake, paired with dual fans for quiet airflow. Its modular electronics—main PCB and sensor modules linked by ribbon cables—enable real-time air quality monitoring. Precision-cut metal components ensure serviceability and a durable structure.

Problem Identification

Sketch Ideation
A rapid sketch ideation phase explored diverse form factors and enclosure strategies, guided by the ambition to unify the design language with Praan’s MKII model. These sketches illustrate a range of volumetric studies, grille treatments, and assembly proposals all developed to enhance the Hive’s luxury appeal and transform it into a true lifestyle product.

Display Ideation
Further display explorations were conducted to develop concepts that ensure essential information remains visible and easily readable in both vertical and horizontal orientations. The process focused on maintaining design symmetry and brand visibility while optimizing user experience. Multiple layout options were evaluated and refined to seamlessly integrate the display with the product’s overall aesthetic and balanced form.

Hive Redesign

Assembly
Hive 2.0 employs a straightforward assembly system using bolts and rivet nuts, enabling secure yet removable top and bottom panels. This approach simplifies manufacturing, reduces complexity, and ensures easy access for maintenance and servicing while maintaining structural integrity and premium build quality.

Enclosure Design
The final enclosure design for Hive 2.0 retains a similar internal layout and component orientation as the original, optimizing spatial efficiency and ease of assembly. It employs a straightforward nut-and-bolt joinery system with removable panels, ensuring durable construction while facilitating serviceability.
